What is Sexuality Counseling?
Sexuality counseling provides a safe, non-judgmental environment to discuss any aspect of sex and sexuality with someone who is trained in the physical and social aspects of the human sexual experience. Focusing on information, education and support, CSCSNH combines a strong understanding of the human body and how medical treatments; illness; medications; and aging all effect the individual experience of sex. We utilizes many theories from behavioral health (such as cognitive-behavioral therapy; rational-emotive therapy) to help you understand communication concerns, and how personal feelings are impacting your experience of sex. We are also trained to recognize deeper emotional or psychological issues that may need referral for more intensive therapy.
How does sexuality counseling differ from clinical counseling or marriage and family counseling?

Darcy has a unique background of experience. Obtaining her nursing degree in 1992 she focused on women's health and reproduction. In 1998 she expanded her education with a dual degree Masters in Public Health, providing a broader focus on community health and wellness , and a certification as a Nurse Midwife. Working with a broad population on reproductive health and wellness for a number of years, she continued her exploration of learing to include a deeper concentration on behavioral health through the Amerian Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Theapists (AASECT). Using her expertise in biology, medicine, and mental health she has created a safe environment for a unique blend of talk therapy and education.
Services
Sexual counseling is much like any other talk therapy. Helping you to address and examine your thoughts, feelings, and concerns regarding your sexuality.
Some of the issues we can help you address are:
- Sexual concerns during life changes (pregnancy; after childbirth; during and after cancer treatment; after medical problems, after divorce or death of partner; menopause)
-Sex drive concerns (libido or desire issues)
-Couples Communication (dysfunction)
-Sexual Pain
-Concerns regarding sexual identity, orientation, or behaviors
How do I know if sexual counseling will help me?
Unlike clinical counseling and marriage counseling, sexuality counselors focus on the impact of social, physical, and emotional health as it effects sexual function and feelings. Although I use many similar types of therapies used in clinical counseling, I do not provide in depth counseling for other mental health disorders or concerns.
What is expected of me during sexuality counseling?
Being honest with your self is a major step to being successful in sexuality counseling. Although I am a medical provider, I do not do physical exams. Talking and communication are the key aspects of this type of counseling.
At no time during counseling will you or your partner be asked to disrobe. Sexual counseling is talking about your sexual concerns, not showing me.
How long does sexuality counseling take?
Every individual has their own unique needs and situations. There is no special formula for a “cure”. Unlike therapy, which tends to be more intensive, and can last for years, sexuality counseling tends to be shorter in duration. Some people find they need only a few sessions to find the right direction for them. Other people need longer support and guidance over weeks or months.

Counseling Sessions
I have sessions in 1/2 hour or 1 hour formats.
Generally most people find that 3 sessions offer adequate time to
1) assess the problem
2) discuss options for finding a solution to the concerns
3) reassess their comfort level with the suggestions or plans.
Because of this theory, I have package options for individuals or couples who commit to 3 sessions at the conclusion of the second session.
If at the end of 3 sessions we both decide to meet longer, that of course, is always possible.
At any time during our sessions if you decide sexual counseling is not for you, or you have achieved the support you needed prior to 3 sessions, you can stop at anytime.
Can CSCSNH handle all sexual problems?
No counselor or therapist can meet everyones needs. Our training covers a very wide range of concerns that many people have regarding their intimate relationships or sexual feelings. If at any time you, or the counselor, feel that another provider would be more adequate, we have a network of professional Doctors,Therapists, or other health professionals that we can help guide you to for treatment.
